Welcome to Lesson 20 - the FINAL lesson of Unit 2 (Essential Grammar)! Today, you're learning question words - the essential words you need to ask questions in Spanish: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, HOW, WHICH, and HOW MUCH.

Master these, and you'll be able to ask about ANYTHING in Spanish! This is a crucial skill for real conversations.

Part 1: The Essential Question Words

Spanish has 8 main question words. ALL of them have accent marks!

💡 Teacher's Tip: ALL question words have accents (´) and come between question marks: ¿...?

Part 2: QUÉ (What?)

¿Qué? asks about things, actions, or explanations.

Basic Uses:

• ¿Qué es esto? (What is this?)
• ¿Qué haces? (What are you doing?)
• ¿Qué quieres? (What do you want?)
• ¿Qué estudias? (What do you study?)

QUÉ + Noun:

• ¿Qué libro lees? (What book are you reading?)
• ¿Qué día es hoy? (What day is today?)
• ¿Qué hora es? (What time is it?)
• ¿Qué color te gusta? (What color do you like?)

Examples:
- ¿Qué es esto? - Es un libro. (What is this? - It's a book.)
- ¿Qué haces? - Estudio español. (What are you doing? - I'm studying Spanish.)

Part 3: QUIÉN/QUIÉNES (Who?)

¿Quién? asks about people. Use ¿Quiénes? for plural.

Singular: ¿Quién?

• ¿Quién es? (Who is it?)
• ¿Quién habla? (Who's speaking?)
• ¿Quién trabaja aquí? (Who works here?)
• ¿Quién viene? (Who's coming?)

Plural: ¿Quiénes?

• ¿Quiénes son? (Who are they?)
• ¿Quiénes hablan español? (Who speaks Spanish?)
• ¿Quiénes vienen? (Who's coming? - multiple people)

With Prepositions:
- ¿Con quién hablas? (Who are you talking with?)
- ¿Para quién es el regalo? (Who is the gift for?)
- ¿De quién es el libro? (Whose book is it? / Who's book is it?)

Examples:
- ¿Quién es ella? - Es María. (Who is she? - It's María.)
- ¿Con quién vives? - Vivo con mi familia. (Who do you live with? - I live with my family.)

Part 4: DÓNDE (Where?)

¿Dónde? asks about location.

Basic: ¿Dónde?

• ¿Dónde estás? (Where are you?)
• ¿Dónde vives? (Where do you live?)
• ¿Dónde trabajas? (Where do you work?)
• ¿Dónde está el libro? (Where is the book?)

Direction: ¿Adónde? / ¿A dónde?

Used with verbs of motion (going somewhere):
- ¿Adónde vas? (Where are you going?)
- ¿Adónde viajan? (Where are they traveling?)
- ¿A dónde corres? (Where are you running to?)

Origin: ¿De dónde?

• ¿De dónde eres? (Where are you from?)
• ¿De dónde vienes? (Where are you coming from?)
• ¿De dónde es el vino? (Where is the wine from?)

Examples:
- ¿Dónde está la escuela? - Está aquí. (Where is the school? - It's here.)
- ¿Adónde vas? - Voy al parque. (Where are you going? - I'm going to the park.)
- ¿De dónde eres? - Soy de México. (Where are you from? - I'm from Mexico.)

Part 5: CUÁNDO (When?)

¿Cuándo? asks about time.

Basic Uses:

• ¿Cuándo es la fiesta? (When is the party?)
• ¿Cuándo trabajas? (When do you work?)
• ¿Cuándo estudias? (When do you study?)
• ¿Cuándo vienen? (When are they coming?)
• ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? (When is your birthday?)

Examples:
- ¿Cuándo vas al trabajo? - Voy el lunes. (When do you go to work? - I go on Monday.)
- ¿Cuándo comes? - Como a las 12. (When do you eat? - I eat at 12.)

💡 Teacher's Tip: Don't confuse CUÁNDO (when - with accent) with CUANDO (when - without accent, used in statements)!

Part 6: CÓMO (How?)

¿Cómo? asks about manner, condition, or means.

Asking "How?" (manner):

• ¿Cómo haces eso? (How do you do that?)
• ¿Cómo se dice "hello"? (How do you say "hello"?)
• ¿Cómo funciona? (How does it work?)
• ¿Cómo vas al trabajo? (How do you get to work?)

Asking "How are you?" (condition):

• ¿Cómo estás? (How are you? - informal)
• ¿Cómo está usted? (How are you? - formal)
• ¿Cómo están? (How are you all?)

Asking "What's it like?":

• ¿Cómo es tu casa? (What's your house like?)
• ¿Cómo es él? (What's he like?)
• ¿Cómo es la ciudad? (What's the city like?)

Examples:
- ¿Cómo estás? - Estoy bien. (How are you? - I'm good.)
- ¿Cómo es tu hermano? - Es alto y simpático. (What's your brother like? - He's tall and nice.)

Part 7: POR QUÉ (Why?) and PORQUE (Because)

¿Por qué? asks for a reason. Porque (no accent, no space) gives the answer.

Asking Why: ¿Por qué?

• ¿Por qué estudias español? (Why do you study Spanish?)
• ¿Por qué estás triste? (Why are you sad?)
• ¿Por qué no comes? (Why don't you eat?)
• ¿Por qué trabajas aquí? (Why do you work here?)

Answering: Porque

• Porque me gusta. (Because I like it.)
• Porque estoy cansado. (Because I'm tired.)
• Porque no tengo hambre. (Because I'm not hungry.)
• Porque es interesante. (Because it's interesting.)

Complete Exchange:
- ¿Por qué estudias español? (Why do you study Spanish?)
- Porque vivo en México. (Because I live in Mexico.)

💡 Teacher's Tip: ¿POR QUÉ? (two words, accent) = WHY? | PORQUE (one word, no accent) = BECAUSE

Part 8: CUÁNTO/A/OS/AS (How much?/How many?)

¿Cuánto? asks about quantity. It CHANGES to match gender and number!

Asking "How much?":

• ¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much does it cost?)
• ¿Cuánto dinero tienes? (How much money do you have?)
• ¿Cuánta agua necesitas? (How much water do you need?)

Asking "How many?":

• ¿Cuántos años tienes? (How old are you? / How many years do you have?)
• ¿Cuántos libros lees? (How many books do you read?)
• ¿Cuántas personas vienen? (How many people are coming?)
• ¿Cuántas hermanas tienes? (How many sisters do you have?)

Examples:
- ¿Cuánto cuesta? - Cuesta 10 dólares. (How much does it cost? - It costs 10 dollars.)
- ¿Cuántos años tienes? - Tengo 25 años. (How old are you? - I'm 25 years old.)

Part 9: CUÁL/CUÁLES (Which?/What?)

¿Cuál? asks you to choose or specify from options. Use ¿Cuáles? for plural.

Singular: ¿Cuál?

• ¿Cuál prefieres? (Which do you prefer?)
• ¿Cuál es tu nombre? (What is your name?)
• ¿Cuál es tu número? (What is your number?)
• ¿Cuál quieres? (Which one do you want?)

Plural: ¿Cuáles?

• ¿Cuáles prefieres? (Which ones do you prefer?)
• ¿Cuáles son tus libros? (Which are your books?)
• ¿Cuáles quieres? (Which ones do you want?)

CUÁL vs QUÉ:

• ¿Cuál es tu color favorito? (What is your favorite color? - choosing from options)
• ¿Qué color es? (What color is it? - asking for definition)

Generally:
- Use ¿Qué? before a noun: ¿Qué libro?
- Use ¿Cuál? with "es" + singular: ¿Cuál es tu nombre?
- Use ¿Cuál? alone: ¿Cuál prefieres?

Examples:
- ¿Cuál es tu nombre? - Mi nombre es Carlos. (What is your name? - My name is Carlos.)
- ¿Cuáles son tus colores favoritos? - Rojo y azul. (What are your favorite colors? - Red and blue.)
