Lesson 18: Definite Articles (Los Artículos Definidos)
¡Hola de nuevo! (Hello again!)
Welcome to Lesson 18! You've learned a ton about verbs (regular and irregular). Now it's time to learn about definite articles - the little words that mean "THE" in Spanish.
In English, we have ONE word: "THE." In Spanish, we have FOUR: el, la, los, las. Don't worry - there's a clear pattern, and once you understand it, you'll use these words correctly every time!
Part 1: What Are Definite Articles?
Definite articles are words that go before nouns to indicate something specific.
In English:
- THE book (one specific book)
- THE car (one specific car)
- THE houses (specific houses)
We use "the" for everything!
In Spanish:
- EL libro (the book - masculine singular)
- LA casa (the house - feminine singular)
- LOS libros (the books - masculine plural)
- LAS casas (the houses - feminine plural)
Spanish articles must match the noun's gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural).
Part 2: The Four Definite Articles
Singular | Plural | |
---|---|---|
Masculine | el | los |
Feminine | la | las |
Examples:
- el perro (the dog - masculine singular)
- la gata (the cat - feminine singular)
- los perros (the dogs - masculine plural)
- las gatas (the cats - feminine plural)
💡 Teacher's Tip: Think of it like a grid - masculine/feminine on one side, singular/plural on the other!
Part 3: How to Know if a Noun is Masculine or Feminine
Masculine Nouns (use EL/LOS)
Most nouns ending in -O:
- el libro (the book)
- el gato (the cat)
- el teléfono (the phone)
Most nouns ending in -L, -R, -N:
- el animal (the animal)
- el color (the color)
- el pan (the bread)
Days of the week:
- el lunes (Monday)
- el martes (Tuesday)
Feminine Nouns (use LA/LAS)
Most nouns ending in -A:
- la casa (the house)
- la mesa (the table)
- la escuela (the school)
Most nouns ending in -CIÓN, -SIÓN, -DAD, -TAD:
- la canción (the song)
- la televisión (the television)
- la ciudad (the city)
- la libertad (the liberty)
Most nouns ending in -Z:
- la luz (the light)
- la paz (the peace)
Part 4: Common Exceptions
Masculine nouns ending in -A:
- el día (the day)
- el mapa (the map)
- el problema (the problem)
- el programa (the program)
- el idioma (the language)
Feminine nouns ending in -O:
- la mano (the hand)
- la foto (the photo - short for fotografía)
- la moto (the motorcycle - short for motocicleta)
Nouns ending in -E (can be either!):
- el estudiante (the male student)
- la estudiante (the female student)
- el restaurante (the restaurant - always masculine)
- la noche (the night - always feminine)
💡 Teacher's Tip: When you learn a new noun, ALWAYS learn it with its article! Say "el libro," not just "libro."
Part 5: Making Articles Plural
To make the article plural, follow this pattern:
Singular → Plural
- el → los
- la → las
The noun also changes:
- Ending in vowel: add -S
- el gato → los gatos
-
la casa → las casas
-
Ending in consonant: add -ES
- el animal → los animales
- la ciudad → las ciudades
Examples:
- el libro → los libros (the books)
- la mesa → las mesas (the tables)
- el doctor → los doctores (the doctors)
- la flor → las flores (the flowers)
Part 6: Special Case - EL with Feminine Nouns
When a feminine singular noun begins with a stressed A or HA, we use EL (not LA) to make pronunciation easier.
Examples:
- el agua (the water) - BUT: las aguas
- el águila (the eagle) - BUT: las águilas
- el hacha (the axe) - BUT: las hachas
- el área (the area) - BUT: las áreas
Why? To avoid the awkward sound of "la agua" (two A sounds together).
Important: The noun is STILL FEMININE! We say:
- el agua fría (the cold water - feminine adjective)
- el águila grande (the big eagle - not el águila grando)
Part 7: When to Use Definite Articles
Spanish uses definite articles MORE than English! Here are the key cases:
Use 1: Talking about something specific
- El libro está aquí. (The book is here.)
- La casa es grande. (The house is big.)
Use 2: Talking about things in general
- Me gusta el chocolate. (I like chocolate - in general.)
- Los perros son amigables. (Dogs are friendly - in general.)
- La música es importante. (Music is important.)
English says: "I like chocolate" (no "the")
Spanish says: "Me gusta el chocolate" (with "el")
Use 3: With titles (when talking ABOUT someone)
- El señor García trabaja aquí. (Mr. García works here.)
- La doctora López es excelente. (Doctor López is excellent.)
BUT NOT when talking directly TO someone:
- ¡Hola, señor García! (Hello, Mr. García! - no "el")
Use 4: With days of the week
- El lunes voy a la escuela. (On Monday I go to school.)
- Los sábados descanso. (On Saturdays I rest.)
Use 5: With languages (sometimes)
- Estudio el español. (I study Spanish.)
- BUT: Hablo español. (I speak Spanish - no article after "hablar")
Part 8: When NOT to Use Definite Articles
Don't use with:
1. Unmodified possessives:
- ❌ la mi casa
- ✅ mi casa (my house)
2. After certain verbs (like hablar, estudiar, enseñar + language):
- Hablo español. (I speak Spanish - no "el")
- Estudio inglés. (I study English - no "el")
3. After "en" with locations (sometimes):
- Estoy en casa. (I'm at home - no "la")
- Voy a clase. (I go to class - no "la")
Part 9: Contractions with Articles
Spanish has TWO contractions with articles:
Contraction 1: A + EL = AL
- Voy a el parque. → Voy al parque. (I go to the park.)
- Voy a el trabajo. → Voy al trabajo. (I go to work.)
Contraction 2: DE + EL = DEL
- Vengo de el trabajo. → Vengo del trabajo. (I come from work.)
- Es de el profesor. → Es del profesor. (It's the teacher's.)
ONLY with EL - NOT with la, los, or las:
- Voy a la escuela. (NOT "ala")
- Vengo de las montañas. (NOT "delas")
Part 10: Complete Examples
With General Topics:
- Me gusta el fútbol. (I like soccer.)
